Huntleigh Outside Art Gallery
When the owners of this breathtaking Huntleigh property reached out to us, they knew they wanted their landscaping to reflect and enhance the existing architecture of their home. The initial concept began as four simple cedar landscape boxes. Working through our collaborative design process, we were able devise unique landscape solutions for the client’s priorities. Our primary challenges were to create a landscape that would:
- Address drainage issues stemming from an essentially flat yard
- Echo and enhance the home’s existing architecture
- Delineate the garden and the Archways as their own space, while keeping them tied into the home’s overall appeal
Working with our sister company, Frisella Outdoor Lighting, we were able to find lighting that would illuminate the stone arch walkway clearly, without overwhelming the home itself or the outdoor entertaining spaces. We used 1.5” round LED waterproof lights at the top of the metal grapevine arches, which give plenty of light to navigate without overwhelming the rest of the landscape.
Our hardscape elements throughout the property used the same stonework elements that can be found in the home itself, allowing us to tie architecture and landscape into a single, seamless creation. Even the bluestone steppers we used matched with existing outdoor patio surfaces. And because the Archways themselves were such a focal point, we kept to straight lines throughout the remaining landscape elements to echo the home’s architecture and avoid detracting from the impact of the Arches.
Many of our design choices for this property were based on appearance. But ultimately, it doesn’t matter how gorgeous a landscape appears – if it’s unmanageable, it will quickly become a nightmare for the homeowners. For this Huntleigh home, ensuring adequate drainage was one of the most important elements of the project. We installed French drains running under all of the flagstone and decomposed gravel walkways. This allowed us to direct water to the rear of the property without unsightly drainage areas or environmental harm.
